iCAP Q discontinuation FAQ

Is Thermo really discontinuing the iCAP Q?
Yes. Thermo Fisher Scientific says the iCAP Q is approaching End of Guaranteed Support (EOGS) and Retirement. EOGS begins September 30, 2027 and continues through September 30, 2028. During that period, Thermo states that parts and billable repair services may be available on a commercially reasonable basis, subject to availability. Retirement is September 30, 2028, when Thermo states that all types of service and support will stop. Ionflight continues to support iCAP Q systems and maintains the technical expertise, repair capabilities and resources to diagnose, source, stock and repair the components needed to support these systems.
What if a circuit board or major component fails?
A board failure should be a service event, not an automatic replacement trigger. Ionflight can diagnose and repair board-level faults, restore critical components, source qualified replacement solutions and identify high-risk, long-lead items worth staging before they are needed.
Will independent service affect my compliance or validation?
Independent service does not automatically invalidate an existing method or qualification. Your laboratory remains responsible for its SOPs, qualification and regulatory requirements; Ionflight works within those requirements and documents the service performed. Any active warranty, OEM contract, accreditation or site-specific requirement should be confirmed before changing service providers.
What about software support?
Thermo states that the final Qtegra ISDS Software version available for the iCAP Q ICP-MS is v2.25, launched in Q1 2026, with no further scheduled releases for the iCAP Q Series ICP-MS. Software risk should be assessed alongside the hardware, including your operating system, connected peripherals, data workflow and laboratory requirements. Ionflight can factor those constraints into the lifecycle review.
How long can an iCAP Q be supported?
There is no responsible one-size-fits-all answer. Condition, usage, service history, parts availability, software environment and the laboratory's tolerance for downtime all matter. The lifecycle review is designed to establish a realistic support horizon for your instrument.
When is replacing the better choice?
When the platform no longer supports the methods, throughput, automation, data or IT requirements the lab needs, or when a known support risk outweighs the cost and disruption of migration. The goal is an honest recommendation, not preserving a Q at all costs.
